Art has a unique way of bringing people together and fostering connections, even during challenging times. Hospice arts programs encourage patients, families, and staff to collaborate, share experiences, and engage in meaningful conversations. These interactions can lead to profound emotional connections, providing a support network that enhances the overall hospice experience. Building these connections is especially crucial for patients who may feel isolated or lonely, as compassionate friendships can develop, promoting a sense of belonging and community.
Hospice care aims to be inclusive and accessible to all individuals in need, regardless of their location or limitations. To achieve this, arts services are now being delivered through local community collaboration projects, reaching those who might otherwise be unable to access traditional hospice care due to geographical constraints.
In 2022/23, the Hospice’s arts team provided individual and group sessions for patients and families, along with live music sessions, cultural events, and arts-based staff support.
During the same period, the Wellbeing Service reached 262 people, offering 1169 attendances, and 224 people benefited from 367 complementary therapy sessions.
Hospice arts services not only benefit patients locally but also have a broader impact on a national and international scale. Hosting annual arts symposiums, participating in community of practice initiatives, and contributing to journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations allow hospices to share best practices, inspire innovation, and elevate the standard of palliative care worldwide.
