Cammy Hannaford (17) from Leith shares his story in memory of his mum, Gillian. She was just 51 when she learned her cancer was terminal - only days before Christmas.

Cammy said: “We always thought Mum would end up at the Hospice, but we didn’t know when. She was diagnosed in August last year and found out it was terminal on 20th December. By April, she couldn’t get out of bed without help. The Hospice at Home team supported her and spoke to Mum and Dad about the benefits of inpatient care. Mum was admitted that same month.

“It was hard not having her at home, but it was good knowing she was well cared for. At first, I expected it to be depressing - it’s where people die, right? But it wasn’t like that. The staff were kind and explained things clearly. When Mum moved to a single room, we decorated it with family pictures. My Mum and sister even had massages.

“I started weekly sessions with the Child and Family Support Team, which helped a lot. My brother did too. My sister isn’t ready yet, but the team understands that. My Dad recently began coming in as well.

“Doctors initially said Mum might live until June, but her illness progressed faster than expected. I would describe her as unfiltered, because she was funny and always said what she thought, but as the tumour grew, she spoke less, and I found it strange to see such a change in her personality.

“My parents met young, and we’ve always been a close family. The Hospice gave us precious time together at the end of Mum’s life. She was there for six weeks, and those weeks meant everything.

“Now, I’m starting a plumbing course and moving to fortnightly counselling sessions. The support will continue for my family long after Mum’s death. Next year, we plan to return to Santa Ponsa, Mum’s favourite place, to scatter her ashes. She always wanted a house abroad - this feels like giving her part of that dream.”
