Role description

Our Wellbeing Volunteers assist with our Community Programme; supporting attendees and helping them to get the very best experience of our classes and helping the class facilitators to set up and tidy away.

The Wellbeing Unit at St Columba’s Hospice Care is a place where people can stay for up to 4 nights for rehabiliation and symptom management, to enable them to live well with their life limiting condition. As part of the Wellbeing Unit, we have a Community Programme based in our Wellbeing Hub, here you will find regular classes and short term 6-8 week self-management programs, as well as Music, Art and Complementary Therapies; all of which can be attended by those in the unit and people who are being supported in the community.

Hospice staff and volunteers are expected to reflect our Hospice Values in the way they carry out their roles, and in their interactions with each other and with patients, family members and any other visitors.

What will I be doing/involved in?

  • Setting up a room beforehand
  • Tidying the room after class
  • Serving tea and coffee, etc.
  • Supporting the class facilitator
  • Greeting attendees; including helping them from their car to the class
  • Walking with people to different areas of the Hopsice as needed
  • Chatting to people
  • Taking part in classes as appropriate
  • Sending out information packs
  • Making phone calls
  • Use of wheelchairs and assisted walking and standing (training will be given)

What experience or skills do I need?

This would suit a retired health professional, those studying in areas of medicine, allied health, nursing, etc. It is also a great opportunity for 6th form students who are hoping to study in these areas and anyone looking to move into a career in Health Care.

Some understanding of palliative care and the work of a Hospice would also be beneficial, but full training will be given.

However, if you are enthusiastic, with good communication skills, fit and healthy, with an interest in supporting people to get the very best out of life; we would love to hear from you! 

Time commitment and duration

One morning or afternoon each week. The role will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

St Columba's Hospice Care, 15 Boswall Road, Edinburgh and the Education Centre, 17 Boswall Road Edinburgh

Volunteer Team Lead in the Wellbeing Unit

Volunteer Services and staff on the wards and around the Hospice.

  • Volunteers must be 18 or over

Training

  • Hospice Volunteer Induction Programme
  • Hospice Orientation
  • Team / role induction and training which will include use of wheelchairs, assisted walking and standing, Health and Safety.
  • Team meetings (if/as necessary)

Additional Information

  • Hospice Chaplains are always available to support volunteers
  • Volunteers may claim reasonable travelling expenses for transport to and from the Hospice, or the place you volunteer, e.g. one of our retail shops. Please speak to your manager about this.
  • The Hospice provides complimentary tea and coffee to all volunteers, staff, patients and families as part of the hospitality strategy.
  • If you volunteer for a full day at the Hospice, you can claim a free meal from the staff café or Iona Café. Please speak to your manager about this.
