Role description
This role helps in creating a friendly, welcoming and helpful environment in our secondhand bookshop in North Berwick. The bookshop sits within our large shop on Westgate, in the centre of North Berwick which also includes a café, art gallery and new gifts. Our Hospice Values are: Care and Compassion, Respect, Trust and Partnership. We aim to demonstrate these values in the way that we operate our shop and café in North Berwick.
What will I be doing/ involved in?
- Greeting and serving customers, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere and excellent customer service.
- Handling cash/ cards and operation of the till
- Sorting and pricing donated books
- Assisting with displays
- Keeping shop well stocked
- Helping to keep the shop clean and tidy
What experience or skills do I need?
- Friendly with excellent customer service and communications skills
- Numerate (able to operate till and handle cash transactions)
- Good knowledge of books and a love of reading
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Physically able to complete tasks such as stocking shelves, sorting books and keeping the shop clean and tidy
- Able to prioritise when the shop is busy
- Be an ambassador for St Columba’s Hospice by keeping up to date with our work and services and being able to answer basic questions from customers.
Time commitment and duration
Generally half a day once a week, but this can also be fortnightly. We try to be very flexible!

Additional information
- Volunteers may claim reasonable travelling expenses for transport to and from the shop. Please speak to your manager about this.
- The café provides complimentary tea and coffee to all volunteers whilst you are on shift
- If you volunteer for a full day at the shop, you can claim a free meal from the café. Please speak to your manager about this.
