Our philosophy is to put patients and families at the centre of everything we do.

Making the time to explore what is important to them and the choices they will have remains fundamental to the care we deliver. Behind every number and statistic is a person who received our support, and a family which we were privileged to help. No two people, or families, are the same and we continue to focus on tailoring our services to try and best meet need.

Inpatient Care

Our inpatient unit had 30 beds until March 2020, consisting of 18 single rooms and four three-bedded rooms, divided into two wards (Cedar and Pentland wards).

In 2019/20 there were 434 admissions to the inpatient unit, with a bed occupancy of 84.5%, slightly above our target of 82%.

Chaplaincy contact (for individuals of any religion, or none) was made with almost all patients and families using our inpatient services.

Community Care

The Community Palliative Care Service admitted 680 new patients to the service, an increase of around 80 on the previous year. Further to this a total of 2,507 home visits were made to support patients and families.

Our plan is to continue to further increase community support as part of our new strategy. Our multi-professional team provided 74 home visits by doctors, 204 by physiotherapy, 370 by occupational therapy and 1,830 by clinical nurse specialist team. Telephone support is also provided to patients, their families, carers and health care professionals. Until February 2020 we provided rehabilitation, focused day therapies and multi professional specialist community support. There were a total of 836 attendances to Day Therapies and new services within this year included a self-management breathing group, a specific ‘assisted day’ for people with advanced progressive neurological illnesses, and a volunteer led social support group.

Supportive Care

The Hospice's Supportive Care provision continues to grow and includes pre and post bereavement support for families and also our ever evolving Arts Service. The Supportive Care Service received a total of 203 referrals, 63 of whom were patients and 140 were family members. The team have provided 1,030 sessions consisting of 832 counselling sessions and 198 family Support sessions.

Over the year, the Arts Service provided 262 arts group sessions and events with a total of 1,838 attendances. Also, a total of 123 attendances to individual sessions were recorded. Making a hugely positive impact in 2019/20, this new service co-led an intergenerational songwriting project alongside Fischy Music, which won two awards at the Building Better Healthcare Awards; Best Collaborative Arts Project (Performance) and Patients Choice Award.

Our child and family support service also continued to grow and develop throughout 2019/20. An advisory group was set up to help inform developments across this service and includes parents and children who have been impacted by the death of a family member at the Hospice. This service also continued to carry out vital work with schools in our area on topics surrounding grief and loss, with two new projects starting in East Lothian.
